Sustainable Design

Decarbonizing the Built Environment

We understand that creating a sustainable built environment is one of the foremost challenges of our generation. We embrace our responsibility and seek integrated solutions for high performance buildings and infrastructure that use our resources responsibly.

Our Expertise

Walter P Moore helps owners achieve their project sustainability goals. We combine our deep expertise of materials, water, and enclosure performance to ensure sustainability metrics are considered as design performance.

Perspectives

The front of the building of 609 Main at Texas Avenue in Houton, Texas is a beautiful glass and steel facade shown here at dusk with a warm glow emerging from the entrance.

Whole Building Life-Cycle Assessment

We are a recognized industry leader in applying WBLCA to the design of building structures and enclosures. We participated in the initial LEED WBCLA Pilot Credit in 2010 when it was first released and our contributions over the past decade have shaped the current requirements. We have achieved the WBLCA credit for 5 million square feet and counting of LEED projects.

Up Front Embodied Carbon

We perform analyses to help quantify, and reduce the up front embodied carbon. We consult at both the building and product level to identify hot spots and achieve reductions. Our digital platforms and data centric approach allow us to accurately track up front embodied carbon impacts throughout various stages of design and construction.

Lower Carbon Concrete

We couple our understanding of concrete material science with an appreciation for construction constraints. We consult with teams on holistic mix optimization, use of novel binders, and help shape the Product Category Rule that defines the parameters to create ready mix concrete Environmental Product Declarations.

Low Impact Development

We understand the importance of creating built environments that mimic the natural process to reduce and treat stormwater from sites. Treating surface water at the source provides for a cost efficient and resilient infrastructure. We accomplish this goal through careful selection of bio swales, pervious pavement, and other innovative techniques

Water Balance

Many communities require on-site detention leading to the creation of areas for detention ponds to store excess storm water. Utilizing this body of water not just for detention but for the creation of an irrigation source for the surrounding areas landscape can reduce the carbon emissions from the treatment and pumping of potable water as well as reduce the costs of ongoing maintenance for irrigated areas.

Building Enclosure Commissioning

Our team collaborates with owners, contractors, architects, and MEP engineers through all project phases to deliver durable, high-performance enclosures that perform as designed. Our thorough understanding of building science fundamentals paired with our practical construction know-how improves enclosure performance, reduces owner risk, and goes far beyond cursory enclosure reviews.
