Overview

Texas Children’s Hospital had a goal to provide a full continuum of healthcare for not only newborns and children, but also for women. The new building, Pavilion for Women, is a hospital where doctors take care of women before, during and after birth as well as throughout a women’s life.

About the Project

The design and engineering challenges were complex beginning with a constrained site and carrying through a four-level below grade parking garage and a two-story curved pedestrian bridge connecting the Pavilion to the existing hospital, located across a major street that is served by Houston’s METRO light rail.

Walter P Moore designed, coordinated and conducted a valet parking rodeo to simulate conditions at the proposed valet drop-off zone. The rodeo included a full size mock-up of the drop-off area. This process was used to validate the VISSIM model.

Walter P Moore functioned as the Project Coordination Administrator (PCA) for the project by administering the project’s overall BIM collaboration review process. Using the Navisworks system, a multi-discipline virtual model was created which allows visualization and detection of interference between discipline components during the design process. In addition, this virtual model was used to develop a construction simulation 4D model which was integrated with the contractor’s erection schedule for the hallmark circular pedestrian bridge. The resulting visual simulation of the erection sequence of the bridge provided the project stakeholders, such as Texas Children’s Hospital, City of Houston, METRO and Texas Medical Center, with a way to visualize potential impacts of the project to surrounding areas.
