About the Project
The Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) expansion project represented a significant growth opportunity for Orlando Health, Central Florida’s fifth largest employer. A community-based health system with nine existing facilities on a highly concentrated site, ORMC is Central Florida’s only Level One Trauma Center for adults and pediatrics.
The expansion included a 10-story patient bed tower and a four-story diagnostics and treatment building. The project also added a new atrium lobby, entry plaza, connecting bridges, and basement, joining the existing facilities with the new loading dock area.
The project aggressively pursued LEAN and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) strategies. A few innovations included an incentive program for design-assist key subcontractors, more streamlined communication, advanced use of Building Information Modeling, protocols to limit RFI’s and change orders, and offsite prefabrication of building modules. The major structural system consisted of a formed beam and slab system, providing long-term adaptability, flexibility, and constructability. Walter P Moore provided an early concrete package before issuing construction documents, which enabled the concrete work to begin three months before its anticipated start date.
