About the Project
McCormick Place West expanded Chicago’s premier convention center into North America’s largest venue, capable of hosting the mega-conventions that cities crave. The facility provides functional flexibility to host shows of all sizes as well as simultaneous and back-to-back shows. The expansion also added ballrooms, 61 meeting rooms, a 36-berth loading dock, and a rooftop garden for 800 guests.
As associate structural engineer, Walter P Moore’s co-located team designed an efficient structural steel structure that provides high-capacity floors for all exhibit spaces and column-free ballrooms. Upon its opening, McCormick Place West became the largest new building to receive LEED Certification.
