Overview
At 23, Faith Malton, has spent her entire life as an engineer. Born without her right arm, shoulder, and collarbone, Malton has been impelled to find solutions for everyday tasks.
Currently a senior at the University of Houston’s Cullen College of Engineering, Malton was featured in the spring 2020 edition of the college’s publication, Parameters.
“ ‘I’m always upgrading myself physically, mentally, and spiritually,’ Malton said. ‘One thing I have figured out is that you can propel yourself in whatever direction you want, and you can go as far as you want, but you must do the work and you have to believe in yourself first and foremost.’ ”
Driven to pursue a career in Civil Engineering, Malton aligned her global experiences accordingly.
“In 2017, she traveled to Peru to learn about water resource management and sustainable practices, leading to her capstone project on aquaponic and hydroponic indoor farming. The year before, Malton was in Antartica studying climate change and global stabilitity.”
Currently an intern in Walter P Moore’s Houston office, Malton continues to build her skills and learn more about client communication. “An essential role of a civil engineer is to be a faithful and trustee agent to his or her client. Without efficient communication and teamwork, the cost of a project increases, the quality of a project diminishes, and the bond between engineer and client is weakened,” Malton shares. “Working at Walter P Moore has improved my communication skills, enriched my attention to detail, and furthered my curiosity and drive to solve challenging problems so that I can be an exceptional agent to clients throughout my career.”
