TEXAS
The Ion | 2023 ACEC Texas Prestigious Eminent Conceptor Award & Gold Award winner
The $72 million renovation and expansion of the 270,000-square-foot Sears department store in Houston’s Midtown into The Ion will anchor Houston’s South Main Innovation District. In 2017, Rice University’s endowment company bought out the remaining years of Sears’ 99-year lease for the property that Rice Management Company (RMC) owns. Designed to bring Houston’s entrepreneurial, corporate, and academic communities together, The Ion will support businesses at all stages of the innovation life cycle and provide resources for Houstonians seeking to participate in the local innovation economy.
San Jacinto College Anderson-Ball Classroom Building | 2023 ACEC Texas Silver Medal winner
San Jacinto College’s 120,000-square-foot classroom building is the largest instructional building in the U.S. constructed from mass timber. The building contains 60 typical classrooms, faculty offices, a large presentation hall, a lecture hall, a robotics laboratory, and a double-height grand lobby space to welcome visitors. The lobby space includes several key mass timber building components, a monumental stair made of glulam beams, a bridge spanning across the short length of the lobby at level 2 made of glulam beams, and cross-laminated timber floor panels, cross-laminated timber feature walls, and a walkway spanning the long distance of the lobby at level 2 suspended by steel rods from the mass timber structure at the lobby roof.
VIRGINIA
Virginia Commonwealth University Adult Outpatient Pavilion | 2023 ACEC Virginia Grand Award winner
VCU’s new Adult Outpatient Pavilion provides an industry-leading experience for patients, staff, and Richmond’s community. The Pavilion consolidated more than two dozen outpatient programs and the Massey Cancer Center into one state-of-the-art 1,040,000-square-foot facility with integrated parking offering 1,100 spaces. Our team utilized the grade changes across the site to provide two entrance levels and maximize on-site queuing space thus minimizing impacts on the busy adjacent streets. Walter P Moore integrated engineering ingenuity with industry-advancing digital workflows to solve technical challenges and maintain an accelerated schedule.
MISSOURI
GEODIS Park | 2023 ACEC Missouri Grand Award winner
GEODIS Park is the largest soccer-specific stadium in the United States and Canada. The venue is highly multi-functional, serving as the home for Major League Soccer’s Nashville SC, with the versatility to accommodate other premier events. The seating capacity of just over 30,000 for soccer allows the MLS to have a destination stadium in one of the nation’s most vibrant cities with the ability to host larger events and matches. The design team responded with a building featuring exposed steel, wood, and brick. The exposed steel frame became the significant architectural expression of the project. Geodis Park has a large, 360-degree canopy, that is supported by slender steel columns and a large, signature X-frame at the back of the canopy. In all four corners, the canopy cantilevers in two directions, creating a protected and dynamic entry feature to the project.
